Classroom Of The Elite Dub

Classroom Of The Elite Dub

Okay, so picture this: it's a Sunday morning, the sun is (barely) shining through my blinds, and I'm craving some anime-binging goodness. I scroll through Crunchyroll, my eyes half-closed, searching for something… different. Something with mind games, maybe a little bit of psychological warfare, you know, the kind of stuff that makes you question everything. And then I see it: Classroom of the Elite.

Now, I usually watch anime subbed. I’m a purist, I guess? I like hearing the original voice acting, the nuances, the everything. But today, I was feeling lazy. Super lazy. So I thought, "Hey, why not give the dub a shot?" And that, my friends, is where the rollercoaster began. (Spoiler alert: it wasn't all bad).

So, let's talk about the Classroom of the Elite dub. The big question, the one everyone's asking (or at least should be): is it any good? The short answer? It's... complicated. But hey, aren't most things in life?

One of the biggest hurdles any dub faces is capturing the essence of the characters. And Ayanokoji, our emotionally-detached protagonist, is a tough nut to crack. His voice needs to be flat, almost robotic, conveying that air of calculated indifference. The dub tries, it really does. But sometimes, it feels like they're trying a little too hard to be emotionless, ending up sounding a bit…wooden.

Don't get me wrong, the voice actor isn't bad! It's just that Ayanokoji's subtle inflections and undercurrents in the Japanese version are almost impossible to replicate perfectly. I mean, come on, the guy's basically a chess grandmaster playing 4D chess with everyone around him. You need a voice that can convey that level of manipulation! Think James Spader in The Blacklist, but anime. (Okay, maybe I'm asking for too much.)

What about the other characters? Well, Horikita, the ice queen of Class D, fares a bit better. Her voice is suitably sharp and commanding, reflecting her ambition and no-nonsense attitude. The dub actually does a decent job of capturing her personality.

And then there's Kushida... Ah, Kushida. The two-faced idol with a secret past. The dub does a pretty good job portraying her bubbly, friendly persona on the surface. But, and this is a big but, the shift to her darker, more manipulative side sometimes feels a little… jarring. Like they're hitting you over the head with it, instead of letting it simmer beneath the surface. You know? (It's like when someone tries to whisper dramatically and ends up just sounding loud and weird.)

One thing the dub does get right is the overall tone. Classroom of the Elite is a dark and often cynical show, and the dub manages to convey that atmosphere pretty well. The dialogue is snappy and engaging, and the voice actors do a good job of selling the tension and intrigue.

The writing for the dub script is also pretty solid. They manage to translate the complex dialogue and philosophical musings without losing too much of the original meaning. Which, let's be honest, is a feat in itself. The script adaptation feels more "natural" in many instances compared to some rushed sub translations you'll find out there, even! Imagine getting to kick back and enjoy what's happening instead of rereading subs 3 times over! (It's a dream!)

Ultimately, whether or not you enjoy the Classroom of the Elite dub is going to come down to personal preference. If you're a die-hard sub purist, you might find yourself cringing at certain moments. But if you're open to a different experience, or if you just prefer watching anime without having to read subtitles, then the dub is definitely worth checking out.

Just go in with an open mind, don't expect perfection, and remember: it's just anime. Have fun with it!

So, back to my Sunday morning anime session. Did I regret watching the dub? Not entirely. It was a different experience, and it gave me a new appreciation for the challenges of dubbing. And hey, sometimes it's just nice to turn your brain off and enjoy the show without having to focus on reading. You know, self care. Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go back to watching anime. Subbed, this time. 😉
