Now, there's no one true way to do this. It all depends on your playstyle. But, based on years (yes, years!) of playing this game, here's my super-duper awesome, totally-not-biased-at-all guide to job assignments. Let’s dive in!

Vaan: The Adaptable Ace

Vaan, our leading man (sort of… okay, mostly he just runs around stealing things), is a blank slate. He can fit into almost any role. That's his blessing and his curse. So, where do we put our energetic sky pirate wannabe?

My Recommendation: Shikari/Foebreaker.

Hear me out! Shikari gives him that sweet Katana action and evasion, while Foebreaker lets him break down enemies and equip heavy armor. It makes him a surprisingly potent damage dealer with some added utility. Plus, who doesn't want to smash something with a giant hammer? Seriously, it's therapeutic.

Alternate Choice: Monk/Bushi. This combo creates a hard-hitting melee damage dealer focused on using katanas and heavy armor. This is probably his best damage dealing role in the game.

Ashe: The Magical Monarch

Ashe, the rightful heir to the throne, is intelligent and naturally inclined towards magic. Let’s lean into that, shall we?

My Recommendation: Knight/Black Mage.

Why this combination? Ashe gets to wield powerful swords, wear heavy armor AND sling spells! It covers multiple different damage types and it helps Ashe keep up with other damage dealers. Trust me, it's a winning formula!

Alternate Choice: White Mage/Machinist. Keep her healing and support strong, but give her some ranged DPS options. It's practical, even if it's not flashy.

Basch: The Stalwart Protector

Basch fon Ronsenburg (don’t you forget it!), the disgraced knight, is a natural tank. He's built like a brick wall, and he's ready to take all the hits.

My Recommendation: Uhlan/Time Battlemage.

He can use spears, wear heavy armor, and hurl time magic spells. It gives him great physical and magical damage along with some support capabilities! If you want him to be an absolute juggernaut, use this combination.

Alternate Choice: Knight/Bushi. Another option is making Basch a heavy damage dealer. This grants heavy armor, shields, and the katana skillset.

Penelo: The Dancing Support

Penelo, Vaan’s childhood friend, is quick, nimble, and surprisingly good at magic. Think of her as the party's cheerleader… who can also nuke enemies from orbit.

My Recommendation: White Mage/Machinist.

I like Penelo as a dedicated healer/support character, but she's also got the magic to back up her friends. Why? Because who says a healer can't also be a gun-toting badass? She can heal, buff, and contribute to DPS! What more could you want?

Alternate Choice: Monk/Time Battlemage. A surprisingly effective healer/buffer with great physical damage.

Balthier: The Leading Man

Balthier, the suave sky pirate (and self-proclaimed leading man), is all about style and panache. He’s also pretty darn good with a gun.

My Recommendation: Machinist/Uhlan.

Hear me out: Machinist gives him excellent ranged damage and item support, while Uhlan grants him spear access and heavy armor! Making him a DPS powerhouse!

Alternate Choice: Shikari/White Mage. He gains access to healing spells and the Shikari skills. It's a fun and unique combination.

Fran: The Mystical Warrior

Fran, the Viera warrior, is mysterious, powerful, and fluent in the language of the wood (whatever that means). She's a jack-of-all-trades, but let's make her a master of some!

My Recommendation: Red Battlemage/Archer.

She gets access to both black and white magic along with a bow skillset. It gives her the most utility overall.

Alternate Choice: Monk/Black Mage. This combo gives her strong magical potential and access to healing through the Monk job.

Remember, these are just suggestions! Experiment, have fun, and find what works best for you. Don’t be afraid to respec your characters if you're not feeling a particular combination. The beauty of Final Fantasy XII is that you can truly customize your party to your liking.
