Henry B Eyring I Love To See The Temple

Okay, confession time. We all know Henry B. Eyring and the iconic "I Love To See The Temple." Don’t we? It’s a primary song staple. A sing-along superstar.
But, dare I say it? I think we might give it a little too much airtime.
A Temple Tune We All Know
Look, I get it. The song is catchy. It’s simple. And it’s all about the temple, which, obviously, is super important.
Must Read
Who hasn't belted it out with gusto during Primary? Or heard it echo through the halls of family home evening?
It's basically the "Baby Shark" of the Latter-day Saint world. Except, instead of sharks, we're talking about sacred buildings.
The Unpopular Opinion
Here’s where I might lose some of you. Buckle up. I think we rely on it a tad too much to teach kids about the temple.
Is it possible that, sometimes, its simplicity overshadows the deeper meaning? Could there be a world beyond those sing-song verses?

I understand the need for simplicity with young children. But there are other ways to instill reverence and a desire to enter the temple.
Maybe we could incorporate stories about temple work. Or, talk about specific things we do inside. Or simply ask: what makes the temple special to you?
Alternatives Abound!
Don’t get me wrong, I'm not advocating for a complete ban of "I Love To See The Temple". I'm just saying, let’s spice things up a little!
There's a whole universe of teachings and resources out there! Let's give our younger generation a more complete and comprehensive understanding.

Think of it like ice cream. "I Love To See The Temple" is vanilla. Delicious, classic vanilla. But there's chocolate, strawberry, mint chocolate chip...even rocky road!
Expanding the Temple Discussion
Consider exploring stories from the scriptures about temples. The temple of Solomon, for instance, is full of rich symbolism.
Or, discuss the importance of covenants made within those hallowed walls. Maybe older children would appreciate a more nuanced explanation of temple ordinances.
Even a simple conversation about what makes the temple different from our meetinghouses can be incredibly valuable.

A Call For Variety
Ultimately, my "controversial" opinion boils down to this: let's embrace variety. The song is great, truly!
However, let’s not let it be the only tool we use to teach about the temple. We must be intentional in our teachings.
Imagine how enriched the discussions would be! Imagine how inspired our children will be!
My Challenge To You
Next time you're thinking of breaking out "I Love To See The Temple," ask yourself: is there something more I can add?

Could I share a personal experience? Could I read a scripture? Can I invite someone to share what they love about the temple?
Let’s broaden our horizons! Let’s help the next generation develop an even deeper, more personal connection with temples.
Let's enrich the conversation with engaging stories, meaningful discussions, and a sprinkle of humor. (Because who doesn't love a good chuckle?).
Who knows, maybe we’ll discover even more wonderful ways to express our love for those beautiful, sacred structures.
After all, isn’t that what it’s all about? Sharing our love for the Lord's house? I think so!
