How To Get The Pencil Eraser In Earthbound

Okay, EarthBound explorers! Let's talk about the one thing that separates the Ness's from the nearly-nesses: the legendary, the essential, the... Pencil Eraser!

You know, that little rubber rectangle that's going to save your bacon when you're staring down a giant pencil statue? Yep, that Pencil Eraser.

Step 1: Get Yourself to Peaceful Rest Valley

First things first, you need to head to Peaceful Rest Valley. Think of it as the slightly-less-peaceful-than-it-sounds-valley. It's got a nice name, but trust me, things are about to get...pencil-y.

If you're not sure where that is, just head generally north-ish from Onett. You'll know you're in the right place when you start seeing mushroom-shaped trees and feel an overwhelming sense of "what did I just walk into?".

Step 2: Brave the Lilliput Steps!

So you made it? Great! Now find the Lilliput Steps. They are near Happy Happy Village.

Now you can't miss the Lilliput Steps, they're...well... small. Like, really small. Like, ant-sized small. If you're taller than an ant, you'll need to... well, become smaller.

Oh, about becoming smaller. Head towards the building next to the steps. On the side of the building, there will be a small mushroom-shaped tree, with a path behind it. Go into the path and you will find a giant mushroom that you can climb. Doing so will trigger a short dialogue. When you are done climbing, go to the Lilliput Steps.

Step 3: Meet the Architect

Okay, so you have climbed up the Lilliput Steps and have made it to Happy Happy Village, good job! Now, follow the path until you see a large, bizarre building. Enter it.

Now it is time to fight Carpainter. I won't hold your hand through the whole fight, but my only advice is: remember to use your PSI powers. They can save you.

Step 4: Befriend the Talah Rama

Alright, so you have defeated Carpainter! Now you have access to the next town on your list, Threed. To get there, you must go to the path east of Happy Happy Village. This is when you will see Talah Rama.

He will take you to Threed and also give you the Pencil Eraser. Now, it will be in your inventory.

You now have the Pencil Eraser! Let's celebrate with a virtual slice of cake! You've earned it!

Step 5: Erase That Pencil!

Now for the grand finale! Remember that creepy pencil statue blocking your path? The one that probably gave you nightmares? Yeah, that one!

Head back to where that enormous pencil statue is. It's a little ways north of Happy Happy Village, near the entrance to Peaceful Rest Valley. You can't miss it. It's a giant, imposing, graphite monstrosity just begging to be erased.

Simply walk up to it and select the Pencil Eraser from your inventory. Voila! With a satisfying poof (or maybe a more EarthBound-y sound effect), the pencil will vanish! You have cleared the path, and now you can continue with your adventure.
