How To Maintain Air Conditioning Units

How To Maintain Air Conditioning Units

Okay, let’s talk AC. Air conditioning. That sweet, sweet relief from the fiery ball of doom (aka the sun). We all love it. We all need it. But maintenance? Ugh. Seems like a chore, right?

The Unpopular Opinion: Is Maintenance Overrated?

Here’s where I might lose some friends. I’m going to say it. Maybe… just maybe… we overthink this whole AC maintenance thing. Hear me out!

The official advice? Change your filters religiously. Clean the coils. Schedule yearly professional tune-ups. Sounds expensive and time-consuming, doesn't it?

I'm not saying ignore your AC completely! That's a recipe for a hot, sweaty disaster. But sometimes I wonder if the constant fretting is truly necessary. It's like, are we treating our AC units like delicate little snowflakes that will melt if we don’t pamper them every five minutes?

My AC unit, for example. It’s a trooper. It's survived several summers of brutal heat and humidity. And guess what? I haven’t always been the most diligent owner. I confess! Sometimes those filter changes… slip my mind. Okay, often they slip my mind.

Basic Sanity Checks (Because Complete Neglect is Bad)

So, what do I actually do? Well, I employ what I call the “Basic Sanity Check” approach.

First: The Filter. Yes, okay, fine. I do eventually change the filter. When? When I notice it’s completely caked in dust and looks like it’s growing its own ecosystem. Probably should be sooner, I admit.

Second: The Listening Game. I listen to my AC. Is it making weird noises? A clanking? A grinding? A sound like a tiny gremlin is trapped inside? If so, then yeah, I might actually call someone. But if it’s just humming along doing its thing, I leave it alone.

Third: The Cold Air Test. Does it blow cold air? This is the most crucial test of all. If the answer is “yes,” then I consider the situation resolved. No need to poke around and potentially break something that's currently working.

Fourth: The Hose Test. Is the drainage hose clogged? Check this out. It could flood your room if not properly maintained.

The "Professional Tune-Up" Debate

And what about those yearly professional tune-ups? I’m still on the fence. Are they a scam? Probably not. Are they always necessary? I'm not convinced. It always seems like the technician finds something that “absolutely needs to be fixed right now!” for an exorbitant fee.

I’m not saying all technicians are dishonest, of course! But I do think it's important to get a second opinion. And maybe, just maybe, learn a few basic AC maintenance skills yourself. YouTube is your friend!

I'm pretty sure Bob Vila himself would approve of a little DIY. (Okay, maybe not the neglecting-the-filter part.)

My (Lazy) Summer AC Maintenance Plan:

In summary, here’s my incredibly simple (and possibly controversial) AC maintenance plan:

1. Change the filter… eventually.

2. Listen for strange noises.

3. Make sure it blows cold air.

4. Don’t panic.

That’s it! I’m sure the HVAC professionals are shuddering in horror right now. But hey, my AC is still going strong. Maybe I’m just lucky. Or maybe, just maybe, a little bit of calculated neglect is okay.

Disclaimer: I am not a qualified HVAC technician. This is just my personal (and possibly irresponsible) approach to AC maintenance. Your mileage may vary. If your AC starts making genuinely scary noises, please, for the love of all that is cool and comfortable, call a professional!

Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go enjoy the sweet, sweet blast of cold air from my (probably slightly dusty) AC unit.
