How To Put A Face Mask On A Softball Helmet

How To Put A Face Mask On A Softball Helmet

Okay, let's be real. We've all stared at a softball helmet and a face mask. Then we thought, "There has to be a better way." It's like trying to solve a Rubik's Cube in the dark. Except the Rubik's Cube is covered in sweat and dirt. And possibly sunflower seed shells.

The "Official" Method (According to Someone, Somewhere)

First, find all the screws. They're probably hiding. They love to play hide-and-seek. Usually, they are tucked away in the deepest, darkest recesses of your gear bag. Good luck with that. You might need a headlamp. I am kidding. Maybe.

Next, try to line up the holes. This is where the magic happens. Or, more likely, where the frustration sets in. It is like that game where you push the shapes through the correct holes. Except now the shapes are angry, and the holes are slightly too small.

Then, attempt to screw everything together. But not too tight! Otherwise, you might strip the plastic. Or cause a small earthquake. It's a delicate balance. A balancing act worthy of a circus performer. On a unicycle.

My (Probably Controversial) Opinion

Honestly? Just duct tape it. I'm kidding! Mostly. But wouldn't that be easier? Think of the time you could save. The tears you could avoid.

Seriously though, wouldn't it be amazing if these things came pre-assembled? Like, straight out of the box? Ready to go? A girl can dream, right?

Okay, okay, I know, duct tape isn't the safest solution. And your coach might frown. But imagine the possibilities! You could use different colors of duct tape to match your team's uniform. You could even bedazzle it! Okay, maybe I'm getting carried away.

The Reality Bites Back

The truth is, we're stuck with the screws. And the lining up of the holes. And the occasional stripping of the plastic. Welcome to softball! Where minor inconveniences become major obstacles.

But hey, at least we look cool, right? Or, at least, we look marginally safer. Safety first, people! Even if it means wrestling with a helmet and a face mask for an hour.

Here's a suggestion, though. Maybe watch a YouTube tutorial. There are probably hundreds of them. Hosted by very patient people. People with skills I clearly lack.

A Few (Slightly More) Helpful Tips

Loosen the screws a little before you start. Don't go full-on Hercules on them. A gentle touch is key. Unless you enjoy replacing screws. Because, trust me, you will lose at least one. It's inevitable.

Ask a teammate for help. Misery loves company. Plus, two heads are better than one. Especially when one of those heads is already feeling defeated by a helmet and a face mask.

Take breaks. Don't try to do it all in one go. Step away. Take a deep breath. Eat a snack. Watch a funny video. Return to the helmet later with a fresh perspective. And maybe a slightly higher tolerance for frustration.

And remember, even if you fail miserably, you're not alone. We've all been there. Staring at that helmet, wondering if it's even worth it. (It is, by the way. Safety first!) And thinking, "Maybe I should just play catcher." (Just kidding... mostly)

Good luck! May the odds be ever in your favor. And may your screws never strip.

P.S. If you do use duct tape, please don't blame me. And maybe invest in a good helmet. A helmet that doesn't require duct tape. Okay? Just throwing that out there.

And finally, remember to check the tightness of the screws before each game. Better safe than sorry. We're out here to have fun, and to play well, but most importantly, we need to protect our heads. Happy masking!
