The Obvious Answer (or is it?)

Everyone thinks they know the answer. “Duh, it’s variable! You use more electricity, you pay more. Fixed costs stay the same, you know?” Yeah, yeah. That’s what they WANT you to think. And, fine, technically, there's some truth there.

Your electricity bill probably jumps in the summer when you’re running the AC non-stop. And winter heating? Ouch. So, it seems like usage directly correlates with cost. Makes sense, right?

My Unpopular Opinion (Brace Yourselves)

Here's where I throw a wrench in the perfectly-functioning, logical machine: Utilities are kind of…fixed. Or, at least, they act like it. Before you come at me with pitchforks and angry tweets, hear me out!

Think about it. You need electricity. You need water. You need some form of heating, unless you're a polar bear living in Antarctica (in which case, why are you reading this?).

Even if you’re super frugal, turning off every light and showering in the dark (please don’t actually do that), you'll still have a bill. There's always a base charge! That sneaky "service fee" that feels like they're charging you just for the privilege of having utilities. Which, let’s be honest, they are.

It’s like a subscription you can't cancel without living like a hermit in a cave. And even then, the cave probably has a fixed property tax! So, escape is futile!

The Illusion of Control

We think we have control. We diligently turn off lights, unplug chargers, and take shorter showers, all in the name of lowering the bill. And sometimes, it works! A glorious $3 saved! High five!

But then something happens. You have guests. You binge-watch a new show. Suddenly, you're running the dishwasher twice a day! And your bill? Barely changes! It’s like the utility company is psychic, already knowing you'll inevitably slip up and use more.

Maybe I’m just being cynical. But approaching utilities as a mostly-fixed cost has been oddly liberating. I budget a certain amount each month, knowing it might fluctuate a bit. I brace myself for the inevitable seasonal spikes.

Instead of stressing over every kilowatt, I focus on bigger savings. Like, maybe skip that daily latte. Or finally cancel that streaming service I haven't used in six months. (Okay, maybe not. But the thought is there!).

You can tweak the margins, sure. But the core expense remains.

So, am I saying you should throw caution to the wind and leave all the lights on? Absolutely not! Conservation is still important. (Especially for the planet, not just your wallet.) But maybe, just maybe, releasing the pressure to micromanage every tiny usage point is worth considering.

Accept that a certain amount will always be siphoned away by the glorious system of supplying us with the basics of modern life. Budget for it. Grumble about it (because that’s our national pastime). And then, go enjoy that long, hot shower. You’ve earned it. And chances are, it won't break the bank. Hopefully.
