Here's where I might ruffle some feathers. People say Cape Town is expensive. And yeah, compared to some parts of South Africa, it is. But compared to London, New York, or even, dare I say, Johannesburg? I'm not so sure. Hear me out!

You can find apartments with views that’ll make your Instagram followers weep. But guess what? You can also find perfectly decent places that won't require you to sell a kidney. It’s all about location, location, location. Fancy Camps Bay views? Prepare to pay. A little further inland, perhaps in Observatory or Woodstock? Suddenly, things look a lot brighter for your bank balance.

I’ll admit, though, landlords are keen on deposits. Be prepared to hand over a chunk of change upfront. Start saving now, kids.

Groceries: You CAN Eat Like a King (or Queen) on a Budget

South Africa has fantastic fresh produce. Seriously. The fruit and veg are amazing, and often ridiculously cheap, especially if you hit up the local markets. I swear I’ve seen avocados bigger than my fist for next to nothing. Okay, maybe I'm exaggerating slightly.

Meat, however... that can add up. But even then, there are ways to keep costs down. Shop around! And learn to love chicken. Trust me, South African chicken is pretty darn good.

And speaking of food... the wine! Oh, the wine! World-class stuff at prices that make you want to weep with joy. That’s a cost of living expense I’m definitely on board with.

Getting Around: The Great Transport Debate

This is where Cape Town loses a few points. Public transport isn't exactly… stellar. The MyCiti bus service is decent in some areas, but it doesn't cover the whole city. And relying on taxis or ride-hailing apps can get pricey fast. Especially after a few of those affordable glasses of wine.

My unpopular opinion? Embrace the secondhand car market. It’s a wild west out there, but you can find a reliable (ish) vehicle for a reasonable price. Just be prepared for the inevitable parking dramas. And maybe a few close calls with taxis.

Alternatively, get really, really good at cycling. Just be aware that Cape Town isn't the flattest city in the world. Those mountain views come at a cost to your thigh muscles.

Entertainment: Fun Doesn't Have to Break the Bank

This is where Cape Town truly shines. There’s so much free or cheap stuff to do! Hiking, beaches, exploring markets, admiring the sunsets… the list goes on. You could spend months just wandering around and never get bored. And let's not forget the Kirstenbosch Botanical Garden. A small entrance fee grants you hours of natural beauty.

Eating out can be expensive, but there are plenty of affordable options. Think vibrant street food, casual cafes, and BYOB restaurants where you can bring your own cheap (but delicious!) wine.

And remember that amazing wine I mentioned? Perfect for a picnic on the beach at sunset. That's entertainment, right there. And it’s practically free!

So, Is Cape Town REALLY That Expensive?

My final, highly subjective, and possibly controversial opinion? It's all relative. If you're coming from a major Western city, you might be pleasantly surprised. If you're expecting it to be dirt cheap, you might be in for a rude awakening. But with a bit of planning, some smart choices, and a willingness to embrace the local culture, you can definitely live a good life in Cape Town without going bankrupt.

Just be sure to factor in that wine budget. It’s non-negotiable.

And maybe invest in a good pair of walking shoes. You’ll need them.

Oh, and learn to say "Eish!" It's surprisingly useful. Even if you don't know what it means.
