There Is A Light That Never Goes Out Cyberpunk

There Is A Light That Never Goes Out Cyberpunk

Okay, let's talk cyberpunk. We all love it, right? Flying cars, neon signs, and morally gray characters. But I have a confession. And it's probably going to get me cancelled. But here goes...

Cyberpunk Needs More The Smiths

Yeah, I said it. All that dark, gritty future stuff? It needs a dose of Morrissey's angst. Hear me out.

I know, I know. Cyberpunk is all about rebellious hackers and megacorporations. It's about fighting the system. But what if the system is just... really, really bumming you out?

Think about it. You're living in Night City. The air tastes like robot farts. You’re probably being tracked by some algorithm. And your best friend is a sentient toaster oven with a gambling problem. Don't you think you'd want to blast some melancholic tunes?

I'm picturing a scene. Our protagonist, a hardened street samurai named Razor McEdge (I'm workshopping the name), is slumped in his apartment. Rain streaks down the window. He's just finished a dangerous heist. Instead of chugging synth-whiskey and brooding dramatically, he puts on "There Is a Light That Never Goes Out."

The music washes over him. He actually cracks a little smile. Maybe, just maybe, things aren't completely awful. At least until the landlord knocks to demand rent, or his toaster oven loses all his eddies betting on robo-horse races.

The Dystopia Deserves a Soundtrack

Too often, cyberpunk soundtracks are all pounding techno and industrial noise. Don't get me wrong, that stuff is great for a high-speed chase. But what about the quieter moments? The moments when your character is just... feeling things?

I'm not saying every cyberpunk movie needs to be a mope-fest set to "Please, Please, Please Let Me Get What I Want." But imagine the possibilities! Picture a montage of androids weeping silently as they listen to "Asleep." A hacker choosing between selling out or staying true to his ideals while "Bigmouth Strikes Again" blares in the background. The drama!

And let's be honest, Morrissey's lyrics are surprisingly relevant to the cyberpunk genre. Lines like

"To die by your side, is such a heavenly way to die"
could easily apply to a desperate romance in a world gone wrong.

Embrace the Angst!

Maybe I'm alone in this. Maybe you all think I'm crazy. Maybe you're right. But I truly believe that a little The Smiths could elevate cyberpunk to a whole new level of emotional depth. It would add a layer of relatable human sadness to the cold, hard reality of the genre.

So next time you're playing Cyberpunk 2077 or watching Blade Runner, try humming a little "How Soon Is Now?" to yourself. You might be surprised at how well it fits.

Or, you know, don't. It's just a thought. But maybe, just maybe, you'll find that there is a light that never goes out... in the heart of every cybernetically enhanced romantic.

And okay, maybe I just really want to see Keanu Reeves look sad while listening to "Girlfriend in a Coma." Is that so wrong?

Think about it. It would be legendary.
