What Episode Does Deidara Die

Okay, let's talk about something... explosive. And by explosive, I mean Deidara. Specifically, when does he finally go boom?
The Big Question: Episode 125?
Most people say it's episode 125, "The Art of the Kill." Fair enough. It's the one where he fights Sasuke. It's got the massive C0 explosion.
But, hold on a minute. Is that really his death episode? Let's dig a little deeper. I have an opinion, and it might be unpopular.
Must Read
A Death of a Thousand Clay Cuts
Think about it. Deidara gets pummeled throughout the entire fight. Sasuke uses his Chidori countless times. Poor Deidara is constantly dodging and weaving.
He's losing chakra like crazy. He's mentally strained. He's basically a walking, talking clay figure held together by sheer force of will. Sounds like a slow, agonizing death if you ask me. Why should we give him the satisfaction of a clean self-inflicted explosion?
My (Controversial) Opinion
Here it is: Deidara starts dying way before the final explosion. From the moment Sasuke breaks his arms, it's all downhill.
Every hit Sasuke lands chips away at Deidara's life force. He's not dead-dead, but he's definitely dying a little more with each passing second. We are seeing him slowly getting closer to that point.

The real death episode? The entire fight, culminating in the C0 finale. He wasn't just killed in episode 125. He was defeated in it.
Evidence: The Anime Itself
Look at his face! He's sweating. He's panting. He's losing control of his clay creations. This isn't the cool, collected Deidara we know (and maybe love a little).
This is a desperate, cornered artist resorting to increasingly drastic measures. And we know what that means for him. Is desperation the best way to show art?
His final act is an admission of defeat. He's not proving his art is superior. He's destroying himself in a fit of pique. He is basically telling Sasuke "Fine! I'll take myself out then!".

Consider This
Imagine a character slowly succumbing to a disease. Do we pinpoint the exact moment their heart stops as their death? Or do we acknowledge the entire process?
Deidara's fight with Sasuke is a slow, agonizing descent into oblivion. The C0 is just the dramatic punctuation mark at the end of a very long sentence.
He lost control. The art wasn't there in the end.
The "Death" That Keeps on Giving
And let's be honest, Deidara's "death" is basically a meme at this point. "Art is an explosion!" becomes a constant catchphrase after this episode.

He gets reanimated later, too! So, technically, he dies twice (or more, depending on how you count it). I'm starting to think he likes dying. Is that his art?
Maybe the real art was the friends he made along the way... Nah, just kidding. It was definitely the explosions.
So, What's the Verdict?
Ultimately, it's up to you. Episode 125 is the commonly accepted answer. But I stand by my (probably wrong) opinion.
Deidara died a little bit throughout the entire fight. Each clay clone he made, each punch he took, it all added up.

He's one of my favorite characters, though. So, in my heart, he lives on. In fact, maybe he never died in the first place!
One Last Thought
Maybe "death episode" is the wrong question to ask. Maybe we should be asking, "What episode did Deidara lose his cool completely?"
Because that's the real tragedy. He was consumed by his obsession and pride. Now that's an artistic choice, at least.
Food for thought! Thanks for reading. Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go create some exploding clay.
