What Happened To Steve On Shameless

Steve-less in Shameless: Where Did He Go? And Do We Really Miss Him?

Let's talk about Steve Wilton, or Jimmy Lishman, or whatever alias he was using this week. Remember him? He was Fiona's charming, ridiculously good-looking, and perpetually lying boyfriend on Shameless. He zipped in and out of the Gallagher's lives like a stolen car on a bad getaway.

So, what actually happened to him? Well, officially, he was "killed off" in season three. Remember the whole Brazilian mafia thing? Yeah, messy. He got kidnapped. We heard about his supposed demise. Everyone mourned. Cue dramatic music.

Except... did we really believe it? I mean, this is Shameless. People come back from the dead all the time (figuratively, usually. Mostly). And Steve, with his uncanny ability to weasel his way out of anything, felt like he had a Get Out of Jail Free card perpetually tucked into his expensive Italian leather jacket (that he probably stole, let's be real).

Then, BAM! He's back in season four! Turns out, those Brazilian mobsters didn't quite finish the job. He returned, as mysterious and infuriating as ever. He tries to win Fiona back, of course. Because that's what Steve does. He's a moth to the flame of Fiona Gallagher's chaos.

But then... poof. He vanishes again. For good, this time (allegedly). We get a brief mention later, confirming he's living somewhere sunny with a new identity and probably a new scam. The end. Or is it?

Here's where my unpopular opinion comes in. Brace yourselves. I don't actually miss Steve that much. Okay, okay, hear me out! He was undeniably charming. Justin Chatwin did a fantastic job. But his constant lies and the drama he brought? It was exhausting! Fiona deserved better.

Steve represented an escape. A fantasy. A life outside the South Side. And while that's tempting, especially for someone like Fiona, it wasn't realistic. It wasn't sustainable. He was a distraction from the real problems, not a solution.

And frankly, the show got better without him. Fiona evolved. She made terrible choices, sure, but they were her terrible choices. She wasn't just reacting to Steve's latest scheme.

Think about it. After Steve left (the first time), Fiona stepped up. She became a (sort of) responsible guardian. She tried to hold the family together. She failed spectacularly sometimes, but she tried. Could she have done that with Steve constantly whispering sweet nothings (and lies) in her ear?

I know, I know. Some people loved Steve. They thought he was Fiona's soulmate. They shipped "Fiona and Steve" harder than FedEx. But I just don't see it. Their relationship was built on a foundation of secrets and deceit. It was a house of cards waiting to collapse. And boy, did it collapse.

So, while the mystery of Steve's ultimate fate is intriguing (did he actually settle down somewhere? Did he get caught in another scam? Is he secretly running a pineapple farm in Paraguay?), I'm okay with him being gone. Shameless moved on. Fiona moved on. And honestly, so did I.

Maybe that's harsh. Maybe I'm a heartless monster. But I stand by my unpopular opinion. Steve was fun while he lasted, but Shameless was better off without him. Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go rewatch season five and admire Jimmy/Steve's replacement...Sean! Now there was a real mess of a man.
