What Level Does Rattata Evolve

Okay, let's be real for a second. We've all been there. You're a kid, blasting through Pokemon, thinking you're hot stuff.
Then comes the inevitable question: When does that darn Rattata evolve?
The Official Answer (and Why It's Wrong)
The books (or, these days, Bulbapedia) say level 20. Yes, officially, Rattata evolves into Raticate at level 20. Sounds simple enough, right?
Must Read
Wrong! I'm here to tell you, that's just not how it feels sometimes.
My Unpopular Opinion: Way Too Late!
Level 20? For Raticate? Come on! That feels like an eternity.
By level 20, your Charmander is practically breathing fire strong enough to melt steel. Your Bulbasaur is a floral powerhouse. Even a humble Pidgeotto is soaring high.
And poor Rattata? Still a buck-toothed nuisance, clinging to life by a whisker. It's just...sad.

The "Feels Like" Evolution Level
I'm proposing a radical solution: Rattata should evolve WAY earlier. Maybe level 14, 15 tops!
Think about it. Rattata is supposed to be this common, pesky pest. It's the cockroach of the Pokemon world.
But, like, even cockroaches get bigger and scarier eventually, right? Level 20 is denying Raticate its rightful place as a slightly more intimidating pest.
Is It Power Creep? Maybe. Do I Care? Nope.
I know, I know. Some purists will argue this throws off the game balance. That evolving Rattata too early would be "power creep."
But honestly, who's relying on Raticate to carry them through the Elite Four? We're talking about a Pokemon whose main claim to fame is being...common.

Let the poor thing have its moment! Let it evolve a little sooner and feel like it's contributing SOMETHING to the team besides being an HM slave.
The Emotional Argument
Let's get a little deeper for a second. Think of the children! Think of the aspiring trainers who catch a Rattata with dreams of raising a powerful Raticate!
Then they're stuck grinding for hours, wondering if their little buddy will ever amount to anything. That’s heartbreaking!
Give these kids some hope! Let them evolve their Rattata before they lose all faith in the power of teamwork.

A Compromise (Sort Of)
Okay, maybe a complete level rewrite is too much. But what about a held item?
Imagine a "Whiskers of Speed" item. Give it to Rattata, and boom! Evolution at level 16.
It adds a little nuance and still lets us get our slightly-less-pathetic Raticate faster. Everyone wins!
The Alolan Exception
Fine, I'll admit it. Alolan Raticate is kind of cool. The sumo wrestler vibes? I'm into it.
But even THAT doesn't excuse regular Raticate's evolution level. Alolan Raticate is its own beast (literally and figuratively).

It gets a pass. The original still needs some love.
So, there you have it. My controversial take on Rattata's evolution. I believe it should evolve sooner than level 20.
Am I alone in this? Probably. But a trainer can dream, right? Maybe someday Game Freak will hear my plea.
Until then, I'll be over here, stubbornly refusing to evolve my Rattata until at least level 18. Just to prove a point.
This is my Rattata, there are many like it, but this one is stubborn.
